Reviews
Title: Osteoporosis and the osteoporosis of the rheumatic diseases. A companion to Rheumatology. Editor: Nancy E. Lane and Philip N. Sambrook This excellent book is part of a series of new titles intended as a companion to the 3rd edition of Rheumatology (Mosby). It aims to provide the reader with a state of the art and comprehensive text on osteoporosis. The editors most certainly have fulfilled this mission. Both the editors and most of the authors from the different chapters are recognized as experts in the field. The book covers most if not all areas of osteoporosis and in addition focuses specifically on bone disorders in rheumatic diseases. Importantly, a strong basic science background is provided for most of the issues covered. Nevertheless, the different chapters are pleasant to read and indicate clinically relevant areas conveying essential information that can be used in clinical practice. In this way, many chapters link bench to bedside in a very comprehensive way. The different sections of this book deal with epidemiology, pathogenetic mechanisms, clinical aspects and treatment. A separate section specifically deals with secondary osteoporosis and osteoporosis in the rheumatic diseases. In the first part, the chapters on epidemiology of fractures and on genetics of osteoporosis provide the reader with an up to date state of the art that is rarely found elsewhere. Interesting new points of view and recent developments are brought forward in specific chapters on the principles of bone mechanics and the use of MRI for imaging bone structure and osteoporosis. The treatment section contains exciting chapters in particular on anabolic factors and combination treatments. Finally, a few interesting topics such as transplantation and inflammatory bone loss get a lot of attention in chapters building on both scientifically and clinically relevant data. In general, this book can be an important tool for the rheumatologist to get an up to date review of osteoporosis with ample basic science and clinically relevant information.
